Tension rose to feverish conditions on Monday after some angry youths took to the streets to protest the killing of a bystander, Jide Oyeleke, by a hit-and-run driver on Ewusi Road, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The accident occurred at about 9 pm on Sunday after the driver of a Toyota Camry vehicle, who was said to be driving at top speed, lost control and rammed into Oyeleke.
The impact of the collision reportedly led to the death of Oyeleke at the spot of the accident.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, noted that the angry youths took to the streets on Monday.
Akinbiyi noted that the accident occurred on Sunday night and an eyewitness’ account indicated that it was caused by recklessness and speeding.
He said, “There is a reported fatal RTA at Ewusi Road in Sagamu allegedly caused by some suspected Yahoo boys due to reckless driving, in between Bright fashion junction and Royal Chemist along Ewusi Road in Sagamu, where one Jide Oyeleke lost his life.
“According to a witness, it was excessive speed that led to loss of control by the car driver, which caused the vehicle to ram into the barber shop and instantly kill the presumed dead man.
“The aftermath led to the protest by the indigenes, who demanded justice and suggested immediate installation of speed breakers on Ewusi Road.”
He added that the deceased body was deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Morgue in Ago-Iwoye while the accident vehicle was evacuated to the police division in the area.
“The presumed dead was deposited at the OOUTH morgue while the affected vehicle was towed to the police MTD in Sagamu,” Akinbiyi concluded.
We reported a similar incident on Monday that a 500-level student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Victor Onakoya, was arrested after his vehicle rammed into a couple riding on a motorcycle along the Igan road in the Ago-Iwoye area of the state, causing their death.
A senior police officer had told our correspondent that the suspect was arrested after a mob attempted to lynch him when they realised the damage he had caused.
Akinbiyi had disclosed that the accident involved a Toyota Camry with number plate JJJ 168 GY and a red Bajaj motorcycle with number plate KNN 873 ZY.
