The Federal Government on Thursday said 60% of Nigeria’s electricity customers have now have prepaid meters.

The feat was made possible by the joint effort of the $500 million World Bank-backed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) and the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE),

According to government sources, the agenda is aimed at ending estimated billing nationwide.

This update came during the second 2026 meeting of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Abuja.

The Director-General of BPE, Ayodeji Ariyo Gbeleyi, revealed that out of 1,033,000 meters delivered, 668,000 have already been installed. He also noted that there is progress on the Electricity Act, with 17 states establishing their own regulatory commissions since April 2024.

Stakeholders have been tasked with fine-tuning the Act to ensure smooth implementation.

Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, stressed that the government is working collaboratively to deliver value across electricity and other critical sectors. The meeting also included the Minister of Finance, the Attorney General’s office, and private sector representatives
