Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has debunked a circulating video suggesting he urged Nigerians to reject the All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the claim as misleading and deliberately distorted.
In a statement released in October 2026, Adelabu’s media team clarified that the footage originated from a 2022 interview, back when he contested the Oyo State governorship under the Accord Party. According to them, the clip was taken out of context to misrepresent his stance and sow discord between him, President Bola Tinubu, and APC leadership.
The statement emphasized that Adelabu has remained loyal to the APC and the President, despite past disagreements over the party’s governorship primaries in Oyo. It noted that while the nomination process was fraught with allegations of favoritism and lack of transparency, Adelabu never considered leaving the party and consistently maintained that his ambition was not a “do-or-die” affair.
“His message has always been clear: loyalty to the party does not mean silence on issues of fairness, transparency, and democratic values,” the statement read.
Adelabu’s team explained that his 2022 remarks were broader reflections on Nigeria’s political climate, stressing that voters should prioritize the integrity and character of candidates rather than party labels. They insisted the comments were not directed against the APC or Tinubu’s presidential bid.
Highlighting his long-standing relationship with President Tinubu, the statement described it as one built on mutual respect and trust. It challenged those sharing the video to release the full interview instead of selective excerpts.
The media office further noted that Adelabu has not granted any interviews since the conclusion of the controversial APC primaries in Oyo. It urged party members, journalists, and the public to verify information before spreading it, warning against the dangers of misinformation.
“Chief Adelabu remains firmly committed to the APC, loyal to the President, and supportive of the party’s broader goals,” the statement concluded, advising Nigerians to rely only on official communications from Adelabu or his authorized representatives.
